Diabetes Mellitus

Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a common disorder characterized by sustained high level of blood sugar of varying severity secondary to lack or diminished efficacy of endogenous insulin (the enzyme that breaks down sugar in the body). Diabetes reinnpathy is a complication of diabetes which affects the eye and may be potentially blinding if not detected on time and treated early.

Common Risk Factor For Diabetic Eye Disease

  1. The longer the duration of the diseases , the higher the risk of the eye relatecomplication.
  2. Commoner in insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (type1)
  3. Poor sugar control
  4. Pregnancy may worsen eye complication
  5. Poorly controlled, co - existing hypertension.
  6. Co - exisiting kidney diseases
  7. Smoking
  8. Excessive weight / Obesity.
  9. High blood lipid level (Hyperlipidaemia).
